Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC)

Overview of VAC

Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) is the federal department dedicated to supporting the well-being of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) members, veterans, and their families. Its mission is to provide exemplary, client-centred services and benefits that respond to the needs of veterans and their families, in recognition of their services to Canada, and to keep the memory of their achievements and sacrifices alive for all Canadians

Services for Veterans

1. Extended Appointment Blocks

Many veterans present with multiple service-related health concerns. Instead of booking several appointments over weeks or months, we offer customizable appointment blocks to address several issues in one extended visit. This option is especially beneficial for those traveling from outside the area (e.g., GTA, London). Fees are adjusted based on the duration and scope of care.

2. Additional Conditions & Claims Support

You may be living with undiagnosed or unrecognized service-related conditions, such as:

  • Cold Weather Injuries (potentially caused by repeated cold exposure)
  • Gastric issues (potentially aggravated by PTSD or other stressors)
  • Hypertension (potentially aggravated by PTSD or other stressors)

We’ll work with you to identify secondary conditions that may be eligible for VAC support. If you’re unsure what to ask about, we’ll help uncover the full scope of what may be relevant to your service history.

3. Service-Connection Medical Letters

Establishing a connection between your condition and military service is crucial for successful claims. When medically appropriate, we provide:

  • Medical opinions and written reports linking your diagnosis to your time in service. This includes instances where causation is indirect.

4. Patient Navigation Support

Understanding VAC procedures can be overwhelming. That’s why we offer Veteran-led navigation support:

  • A knowledgeable guide with firsthand experience in VAC systems
  • Assistance in completing and reviewing all documentation
  • Answers to your questions about processes, timelines, and benefits
  • Access to a peer support network of other Veterans going through similar processes with VAC.

Let us support you with care that’s thorough, compassionate, and informed by real-world veteran experience. Whether you need help organizing paperwork or understanding your next steps, we’re here to help.

Patient Flow: What to Expect in Your Care Journey

1. Initial Assessment

Your care begins with a comprehensive consultation designed to understand your health concerns and military service history. In this session, we will:

  • Review your current symptoms and conditions
  • Gather a detailed service-related medical history
  • Identify potential VAC-eligible conditions
  • Discuss your goals and priorities for treatment and documentation

This appointment sets the foundation for your care and any future claims. Longer appointment blocks are available if needed to cover multiple concerns.

2. Testing & Referrals

Based on the assessment, we coordinate any necessary testing to support a complete diagnosis. This may include:

  • Diagnostic imaging (e.g., X-rays, MRIs)
  • Blood work or lab tests
  • Specialist referrals (e.g., rheumatology, mental health, orthopedics)

We also:

  • Ensure that tests align with VAC documentation needs
  • Provide clear instructions and help with booking when needed

This phase ensures all relevant medical evidence is gathered to support your care and any VAC claims.

3. Diagnosis & Documentation

Once test results are received, we meet again to:

  • Deliver a final diagnosis
  • Complete any VAC forms and documentation
  • Write medical opinion letters linking your condition to your military service, when applicable

This visit may also include:

  • Recommendations for treatment or ongoing care
  • Coordination with a Veteran Patient Navigator to ensure all paperwork meets VAC standards

The goal is to set you up for successful benefits applications and ongoing support tailored to your service-related health needs.
