FAQ

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners (NP) can work on their own and do not need to be supervised by a physician to practice. NPs have an autonomous scope of practice, but typically work in collaboration with physicians and other health care professionals.

See the College of Nurses of Ontario’s (CNO’s) Practice Standard: Nurse Practitioners for more information at (this link)

PhloxHealth Nurse Practitioners are licensed by the Province of Ontario and are all in good standing with their licensing bodies.

My family doctor is busy, can I book an appointment with you without being discharged from my family doctor?

Yes, you can safely book an appointment with us as we are a private pay clinic. Your family physician will not be charged for your consult, and will not discharge you from their care.

When can I book my visits?

Consults are available Monday – Friday starting at 9 am – 5 pm. Visits will be booked according to first come first serve as well as Nurse Practitioner availability. Infusions are available only on Tuesdays after 5:30 pm.

What happens if I miss or do not show up to my appointment?

We understand that there are times when you must miss an appointment due to emergencies or obligations for work or family. However, when you do not call to cancel an appointment, you may be preventing another patient from getting much needed treatment. Conversely, the situation may arise where another patient fails to cancel and we are unable to schedule you for a visit, due to a seemingly “full” appointment book.

If an appointment is not canceled at least 48 hours in advance you will be charged a fifty dollar ($50) fee.

How long do I have to wait for my visit to be booked?

Visits are booked and confirmed within 24 hours of receiving your appointment request.

What happens if my Nurse Practitioner rejects my appointment request?

If your NP rejects your appointment request you will receive a notification and a reason as to why, including an alternative appointment date and time depending on availability.

What happens if my Nurse Practitioner is unable to help me during my virtual consultation?

On the rare occasion, if within the first few minutes of your visit the Nurse Practitioner determines that you need an in-person consultation, or they are unable to help you with your request, you will be informed and advised as to your best options. Furthermore, we can provide assistance in scheduling a future appointment.

Can I choose my Nurse Practitioner?

Most often the visit will be conducted by the first available Nurse Practitioner. Unless it is a follow up call then an effort to keep the same Nurse Practitioner is made to facilitate continuity. This allows us to meet your needs in the most efficient and timely fashion.

If you want to keep using the same Nurse Practitioner, please contact us directly via email or phone.

How do I get my prescription?

A prescription will be faxed to a pharmacy near you. If you have a preferred pharmacy or location, please inform your Nurse Practitioner.

How do I get my lab work done?

A requisition will be faxed to the nearest lab in your location.

Can I book appointments for my children?

Yes, you can book an appointment on behalf of your child. At the time of the visit, you and your child will both need to be present for the consultation.
